Wake Up America

05/16/16 03:53:pm

The 65th annual National Day of Prayer will be on Thursday, May 5, 2016. This years theme is “Wake Up America” with Isaiah 58:1a, “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet” as this year’s Scripture. We will be meeting at the Washing County Courthouse Square at noon.

If you take a closer look at Isaiah 58, you will see God telling His people how displeased He was with their behavior. In verses 3-7, the people of Israel ask God why He wasn’t recognizing their religious actions of fasting. God explains that their actions were done half heartedly. They were being hypocritical in their fasting so it couldn’t possible be a genuine prayer to God. A genuine prayer should involve remorse and repentance of sin. Genuine prayer should also involve humility and a concern towards the needs of those around you. In verse 9, we see a time when God will be completely responsive to the prayers of His people. This will be done when the people are converted, transformed, and repented.

I believe this year’s theme is very fitting. We need to wake up as a nation but also as a body of believers. Until we unify as believers, stop the empty rituals and programs, and truly honor God with our lives, God will continue to be displeased with us. Until we take His Word seriously and start living the life He has called us to live, we will see our nation continue down a destructive path. Will you join me and the Washington Ministerial Association in humbly coming before God with a genuine and repentant spirit and asking Him to use us for the change that needs to be made in our nation? I hope to see you in the square at noon on Thursday, May 5.
